University to celebrate life of 'inspirational' principal

THE life of the late principal and vice-chancellor of Robert Gordon University is to be celebrated at a special event at the university in Aberdeen this month

Professor Mike Pittilo, who was described as an "inspirational leader" by colleagues, died of cancer last month at the age of 55. He had been appointed five years ago and, although he had been ill for some time, continued to work at his post until a week before his death.

A spokesman for the university said the event in memory of Prof Pittilo would be held at the university sports centre on 27 March. "The celebration of Mike's life and achievements will be open to all, with members of the local community expected to join university staff and students," he said. "Representatives from higher education are expected to travel from across the UK to attend the event."

Professor John Harper, acting principal, said:

"Mike has left a lasting legacy for us at Robert Gordon University, and his presence and influence will be with us for years to come."

A biologist by training, Prof Pittilo joined the Aberdeen institution in September 2005 from the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, where he had been the vice-chancellor.

He was made an MBE last year for his services to health.
