UK premiere of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg documentary to be held in Glasgow

SIXTIES icon Jane Birkin is heading to Glasgow in January for the UK premiere of a new documentary about her famous relationship with Serge Gainsbourg - and a live stage show.

The 65-year-old singer and actress, who shot to fame with the hit controversial hit single “Je T’aime” and films like Blow-Up and Wonderwall, will be one of the headline stars at next year’s Glasgow Film Festival.

Never seen before footage of the couple during their much-publicised 13-year relationship is featured in the film, Souvenirs of Serge, which will be screened as part of the festival.

London-born Birkin, who had a number of famous collaborations with Gainsbourg throughout her career, will be performing a set of his material in the city as part of the music strand of the Glasgow Film Festival, which is being curated with the Arches.

Other festival events confirmed today include a barn dance and 60th anniversary screening of Calamity Jane at the Grand Old Opry dance hall and an all-day “sonic cineplex” club event at the Arches headlined by iconic US techno star Jeff Mills.

A 20-piece classical outfit, the Auricle Ensemble, will be performing live to accompany a screening of the seminal American documentary The City, which was produced for the New York World’s Fair.

Scottish folk trio Lau will be performing live alongside a screening of a new short film inspired by both their music - and the doomed marriage of actress Marilyn Monroe with playwright Arthur Miller.

The multi-media project, Whatever Sees You Through The Night, will be returning to the Arches, with live performances by Rachel Sermanni already confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the Glasgow Film Festival said: “The festival is celebrating the long, strange and wonderful relationship between music and cinema, with an exciting programme of performances, rockumentaries, live soundtracks events and audio-visual explorations.”

Tickets for the above events are now on sale. The full festival programme will be released on 16 January.
