Travel: Stonegate Court, York

YORK is world famous for its myriad attractions. Aside from The Shambles – which has just been voted Britain's most picturesque street – and the iconic York Minster, there are museums and galleries aplenty. In what other city can you see stunning medieval architecture in the morning then get on board a Japanese Bullet train in the afternoon? One short visit hardly scratches the surface but it can give you a taster of what York has to offer.

What you need is a central base to let you explore the city. And what could be more central than to be in the shadow of the Minster like Stonegate Court, a luxury development within the historic walled city. You feel as though you could reach out and touch the towers of the Minster from the apartment's front door.

However, once you're on the other side of that door, all thoughts of history disappear. This is modern five-star luxury. From the dishwasher to the power showers, there's little medieval about this place.

Wining and dining?

Since it's a self-catering apartment, the food is entirely up to you. If you do want to cook, the kitchen has everything you could possibly need. As well as a great electric hob and oven, there's a microwave and fridge freezer.

In fact, it may well be better equipped than many kitchens at home, but since you're away, try the local restaurants and cafs. York has a great number of fantastic tea rooms, of which Betty's is probably the best known, but if you fancy something more upmarket, the award-winning Blue Bicycle specialises in seafood. It's busy so book ahead.

Room service?

The purpose of the apartment is to let you behave as though you were at home – and that's very easy to do. When you've spent all day walking, the thought of a long soak is enticing. The main bedroom has an en-suite with a great power shower, while the second bedroom is opposite the large family bathroom.

There's an enormous temptation to don a fluffy robe, kick back on the comfy sofa and relax. Or even sit out on the sun trap of a terrace. Above the bustle of the old city, you have complete calm and privacy. Our one concern was that the old Minster's bells would keep us awake – but we needn't have feared. The bells don't ring at night.

Worth getting out of bed for?

Where to start? There's so much to see in York that it might be advisable to get yourself a guide.

The tourist board (www.visityork.com) has loads of different options from an association of voluntary guides who offer free walking tours of the city to an interactive story book for children.

Of course, if you fancy a little jaunt, there's always the sport of kings. Yorkshire has eight racetracks, all within easy reach.

Budget or boutique?

Actually, it's both. You have all the lovely little touches, privacy and exclusive location you would expect from a stylish boutique hotel – at a budget stay price. Despite the town centre location, you aren't disturbed by noisy nightlife going on down below.

There are so many, it would be impossible to list them. From the complimentary wine, snacks and flowers on arrival to the toiletries and candles in the bathrooms – everything has been thought of. There's wireless broadband and satellite TV, flatscreen TVs and iPod docks in all the rooms.

And owners Sue and Malcolm Kitchener will happily cater to any special requirements, from decaf coffee to special non-allergenic bedding. The bowls of sweets throughout the apartment were a wonderful touch – that my waistline could have done without. There's even ice in the freezer. It's almost better than being at home.

Also, Stonegate Court offers free parking in a nearby car park. When you book, you'll be sent a permit, which lets you unload then allows free entry to the secure car park. Sue will also send you clear and concise directions to help you navigate the largely pedestrianised area within the city walls.

Guestbook comments?

You can enjoy the great nightlife York has to offer, safe in the knowledge that your accommodation is the easiest to find in the city – just look for the Minster. You feel a real part of the history staying in one of the town's most exclusive addresses in town. Although do beware early morning workers in the offices opposite. You – and they – can get a shock when you open the blinds of a morning.

You can book a stay from two nights (598) to as long as you like. The weekly rate is 1,196 for the two-bedroom apartment that sleeps four adults. They don't however, accept stag or hen groups. See www.yorkluxuryholidays.co.uk or call 01904 766789 or 07746 552478.
