Travel: 48 Hours in Boston

Friday, 8:15pm Arrive in Boston and check in to the Liberty Hotel, Charles Street (www.libertyhotel.com), formerly a 19th- century jail.

Saturday, 9am Get up early and head to the Flour Bakery for your breakfast (www.flourbakery.com). It's a bit of a trek but you'll be glad of the exercise when you see their cakes.

12:30pm Depart from Long Wharf on a three-hour whale-watching trip. A luxury catamaran is your vessel for spotting humpbacks and dolphins in their natural habitat (www.bostonharbourcruises.com).

4pm Stroll around the Faneuil Hall Market and admire the beautifully stacked fresh fruit and veg.

6pm Head back to the hotel and enjoy a glass of wine in Alibi – the hotel bar. Set in what were originally the 'drunk tank' police custody cells, the atmosphere is quite original.

10am Get off at Newbury Street and do a spot of shopping in the numerous boutiques and designer stores.

1pm Enjoy a hearty US-style lunch at Joe's American Bar and Grill (www.joesamerican.com)

3pm Rejoin the trolley tour and take a ride to Fenway Park (www.boston.redsox.mlb.com), home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team

7pm Dinner and dancing at Caprice (001 617 292 0080). Spend your last few hours in this vibrant city in one of its very hottest venues.

Monday 8am

Return flight to Edinburgh.
