Third of Scots set for staycation as UK becomes #1 destination for Britons

A third of Scots are to staycation this summer - making the UK the most popular holiday destination this year among Britons - as more people steer away from areas perceived to be at an increased threat of terrorism.

The Asda Money survey found that 31 per cent of Scots are to stay in Britain, while a further seven per cent are going to Spain and six per cent to Italy.

Neil Foster, head of Asda Travel Money, said: “In the last year we have seen some distinct changes in people’s holidaying habits and it comes as no surprise that Brits are staying put in the UK this summer.

“While France and Spain continue to remain popular destinations for a summer break, we have seen a significant decrease in the number of people heading to Turkey, evidenced in our research and through our currency sales, which is no doubt due to recent global issues.”

UK-wide, a staycation remains the most popular choice, followed by Spain and the US. The least popular destinations were Dubai, The Caribbean, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, India and Thailand.
