Theatre review: Under the LaddertheSpace on North Bridge (Venue 36)

There are discernibly the makings of a decent ghost story in this Z Theatre Company show, set amid rehearsals for an amateur production of Hamlet, but sadly they’re sabotaged from the outset by equally feeble writing and performances, and increasingly by the narrative’s confused internal logic.

RATING: * *

One of the (fictional) cast unluckily names Shakespeare’s “Scottish play”, instantly triggering a succession of malign events, from apparent hallucinations to the lead actors’ being possessed by their Hamlet characters. The piece purports to explore the validity or otherwise of superstitions, and attempts a twist in the tail, but is so half-baked throughout that the latter succeeds only as welcome release.

Until 16 August. Today 11:05am
