Theatre review: Salt and Pepper, theSpace on North Bridg (Venue 36)

The setting is a restaurant or café – a strange kind of establishment, staffed by a waitress at a reception podium serving pre-work breakfasts and student lunches, but taking reservations for 11am.

Star rating: * *

Only the one table is ever occupied, and over the supposed course of a day, nobody finishes a meal.

This lack of attention to basic credibility or continuity also extends to the performances, by Hull University’s Z Theatre Company, in a show whose main selling point, as customers/characters come and go, is its incorporation of recorded inner monologues with live dialogue and slapsticky mime. The resulting private/public disparity is anything but revelatory.
