Theatre Preview: Whisky Galore, Church Hill Theatre

EDINBURGH People’s Theatre (EPT) celebrate their 70th anniversary this week at the Church Hill Theatre in Morningside, where they present Sir Compton Mackenzie’s classic comedy Whisky Galore.

Founded in 1943 by playwright Andrew P Wilson, EPT was set up as a respite for workers not fighting in WWII, and for service men on leave or home because of injuries.

It’s back to October 1941 that the company travel to tonight, and to the Hebridean islands of Great Todday and Little Todday. Both are islands sunk deep in the doldrums of a spiritless wartime existence until the SS Cabinet Minister runs aground nearby and, by a miracle, there is ‘uisghe beatha gu leoir’ - whisky galore.

As the whisky flows, various young couples find the path of true love smoothed and the village schoolmaster slays his personal dragon, but the commander of the local Home Guard finds his duty becoming harder every day.

It’s a fitting way to celebrate the company’s birthday as Sir Compron himself expressed his warm approval of this stage version, which EPT first performed at the 1966 Fringe.
