Theatre Preview: Jekyll and Hyde, Church Hill Theatre

EDINBURGH amateurs The Bohemians take to the stage of the Church Hill Theatre this week in Leslie Bricusse and Frank Wildhorn’s dark and dangerous musical, Jekyll and Hyde.

Intended for mature audiences, this evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart.

Convinced the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of man’s evil nature from his good, Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in London as the savage Edward Hyde.

“The cast paid homage to Robert Louis Stevenson by taking part in a scavenger hunt around Edinburgh town centre last weekend, solving clues to visit places associated with the writer - such as the house he lived in on Heriot Row, The Writers Museum and The Hispaniola Restaurant on Drummond Street,” reveals Bohemians’ spokesperson Bruce.

“As Robert Louis Stevenson was a local lad and original writer of our piece, we thought it important to educate ourselves about him in a fun way.”

The musical includes popular songs such as A New Life, Someone Like You and the anthemic This Is The Moment, which transformed Jekyll and Hyde into a theatrical phenomenon.
