Review: Gob Shop, Sapphire Rooms (Venue 77)

Cathartic Connections’ attempt to make a comfort zone between a piece of site-specific theatre and a glimpse behind the scenes of a strip club is a good idea wasted. *

Gob Shop aims for a natural, playful feel but comes across as sloppy, and is guilty of making arrogant presumptions about how lowly its audience must regard strip club workers and patrons as being.

The fact that one cast member, Liina,is an actual stripper is the axis upon which the show turns, and her anecdotes are illuminating. But the lapdance for a caricature pervert scene is lame, the drinking game/dress up routine pointless, and the fourth-wall-penetrating cast “confessionals” horribly contrived.

Until 26 August. Today 4:30pm.
