Paul Michael Glaser set for Festival Theatre

SEVENTIES TV heart-throb Paul Michael Glaser is to play the lead role in a new production of Fiddler on the Roof, which will tour to the Festival Theatre later this year.

The veteran performer best remembered for playing David Starsky in US cop show Starsky and Hutch, will play Tevye in the musical which is directed and choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood.

70-year-old Glaser is no stranger to Fiddler on the Roof having appeared in the classic 1971 film version of the musical as the student Bolshevik revolutionary Perchik, who falls in love with Tevye’s second daughter.

The musical tells the story of Tevye, the local milkman, who has always stuck by his traditions until suddenly his headstrong daughters decide they want to marry for love rather than accept whatever the Matchmaker comes up with.

Fiddler on the Roof is based on Sholem Aleichem Stories, with book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It premiered on Broadway in 1964.
