Gig review: Sweethearts of the 40s - Free, Laughing Horse @ The Free Sisters (Venue 272), Edinburgh

It’s always nice to hear the pop tunes of the 1940s getting an airing (and the Second World War seems popular at the Fringe this year – I heard Neville Chamberlain’s historic September 1939 announcement twice in one day) but “nice” is really the only way to describe this show which comprises a stream of hits made famous by the likes of George Formby, Vera Lynn and The Andrews Sisters.

Sweethearts of the 40s - Free

Laughing Horse @ The Free Sisters (Venue 272)

Star rating: * *

The two Blitz Sisters have pleasant enough voices and turn out some pretty harmonies, but they struggle with songs that require a broad vocal range and the whole thing lacks pizazz.
