Comedy review: Nik Coppin’s Caricatures – Free Festival, Laughing Horse @ City Cafe (Venue 85), Edinburgh

The man who gave Edinburgh first Shaggers and then the delightful Huggers attaches yet another string to his comedic bow: we now discover he is a talented caricaturist. This is another of the kind of shows that make the Free Fringe great.

Nik Coppin’s Caricatures – Free Festival

Laughing Horse @ City Cafe (venue 85)

Star rating: * * *

Coppin was going to give Edinburgh a miss. But he loves it and so threw talent, enthusiasm, half a dozen caricatures and a change of underwear into a bag and here he is offering a lovely, low-key hour of enjoyment.

There were four of us there when I saw it and we had an absolute ball. Even though Coppin made a borderline slanderous allegation about me stealing his hair – “enormous afro” was his description, I seem to remember.

But then we also get Barbados and shape-shifting Ed Miliband, Kylie and the politics of “mixed race” and a passionate debate about the chances of Spider-Man if he was in a fight with Wolverine. A lovely, friendly, feel-good hour for free. What’s not to like ?
