Comedy review: Josie Long: Romance and Adventure, Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33), Edinburgh

JOSIE Long’s political awakening continues apace with this disjointed but entertaining extension of her socialist battle cries.

What she wants from life is romance and adventure, to indulge her unfortunate natural talent for aristocratic pursuits. Unfortunately, she’s possessed by even stronger urges to shoot Tories.

Big on childish tantrums, her resistance hasn’t developed far beyond re-christening her toilet after a prominent cabinet minister, hoping Richard Branson is a character from a Kurt Vonnegut novel, or most spectacularly, that the ineffective Ed Miliband has been playing possum all along, ready to assume power with Incredible Hulk-like reserves of fury.

Alienated and bewildered, she suddenly lost all sense of herself, undergoing a crisis of confidence upon reaching her fourth decade, rattling around in the fashionable warehouse conversion that she hates.

Generating big laughs from her persecution by one of those Top 100 Things To Do Before You Turn 30 lists, ultimately she rediscovered her purpose in taking direct political action.

Breathlessly delivered in an engaging stream of consciousness, there’s tremendous vim and variety to her reliably funny routines. But it’s all a bit disorganised and overwhelming to completely absorb in one sitting.
