The guide: Stage action hots up as temperatures plummet

THE snow might be falling, but all around the Lothians actors are battling the elements to bring some festive cheer and a couple of hours' escape from the elements. Below is a quick round-up of shows that have survived the weather so far, although it's always worth checking with individual box offices.

MOTHER GOOSE ****

MOTHER Goose continues to pack them in at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh. When Vainglorious the demon falls in love with the bonny Jill, he is furious to discover she is already smitten with Prince Jack of Tranent Castle. Appealing to her conceit, Vainglorious casts a spell on Gertie Gaga, the Prince's cook, and enlists her help to split Jack and Jill. Will the silly old bird be able to resist?

THE SNOW QUEEN ****

THE Royal Lyceum has opted for one of Stuart Paterson's favourites this year. From her ice palace at the very top of the world, the wicked Snow Queen plans to turn everything to winter - sound familiar? She starts by casting her spell over one little boy, Kay, turning his heart cold and letting him see only misery and ugliness in the world. But Kay's friend Gerda undertakes a quest to save him, and the rest of mankind, from eternal chill.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS AND THE PRINCESS OF SPAIN

AT the Traverse it's "one for all, and all for one!" This brand new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic follows young D'Artagnan and his trusty companion Constance, as they attempt to save the city from the clutches of the evil Cardinal. Read Thom Dibdin's review here tomorrow.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott are back together in this year's King's panto. Now well into their previews, the show opens officially tomorrow, promising to be bursting with "brand new comedy", stunning sets and outrageous costumes. Read Josie Balfour's review in Thursday's Evening News.
