On this day in 1909, one of Scotland’s most prolific writers, historical novelist Nigel Tranter was born in Glasgow.

Tranter was educated in Edinburgh at George Heriot’s School and trained as an accountant before the publication of The Fortalices and Early Mansions of Southern Scotland in 1935.

Best known for his historical novels on mainly Scottish subjects, he also wrote in other areas, such as novels of the American West.

The writer was also famous for handwriting his novels during a daily walk along the scenic shoreline - a routine he developed while serving in the forces during the Second World War.

He developed his own waterproof pen and paper to protect his writing from the elements, as he was often splashed by rain and sea spray during his walks.

The writer died in 2000 at the age of 90 after contracting the flu.
