T in the Park review: The Phantom Band

Radio One / NME Stage, Sunday

GLASGOW'S finest experimental rockers are handed the unenviable task of opening the substantial Radio One / NME Stage a little before noon - hours before many campers have emerged bleary-eyed from their tents.

But to the Phantom Band's credit, a respectable audience - whether drawn by the decibels or their growing reputation - soon clusters around the front barrier to enjoy their meaty, inventive guitar rock.

Tracks from last year's excellent second album The Wants are given an early airing, combining growl and guile to marvellous effect.

But the highlight of the set comes in the shape of Folk Song Oblivion, which is taken to its raucous extreme by a band which boasts not one but three guitarists today.

Noticing the bright weather singer Rick Anthony ponders, "Where's the f***ing rain?" He then thanks us for spending our morning with them (well the last five minutes of it), before entreating us to "enjoy Beyonc".

The Phantom Band have taken one of the most daunting timings of the weekend and turned it into a real highlight, so we'll forgive them for mixing up their days.
