T in the Park review: Bright Eyes

Red Bull Stage, Saturday

ADORATION is not an uncommon thing during a Bright Eyes set. Tonight, from the moment Conor Oberst walks onstage, it's almost universal. As the relentless pounding beat echoes from the nearby Slam Tent, he jokes about starting a mash-up; if you can't beat 'em, might as well join them.

The band plays a good mix, with the likes of 'Bowl of Oranges' and 'Lover I Don't Have to Love' (which Oberst gives as a rude dedication to Chris Martin) standing out, not to mention the thumping 'Road to Joy', which bangs its way to a chaotic crescendo with brass, keys, guitars and drums crashing together - not to mention the crowd haphazardly singing and clapping along.

For a lower-key end note, the band plays 'One For You', the closing track to this year's The People's Key. Getting right down into the crowd, he parades around the front to the refrain 'You and me, you and me... that is an awful lot'.

Is it their last tour? Not according to Conor Oberst, who has been keen to downplay the idea that Bright Eyes will disband after this album; and, as a band, they don't feel like they want to stop any time soon. In that case, let's hope there are more nights like this to come.
