The ballroom dancer and head judge on the show has spent the early part of his week in Los Angeles appearing on the American version, and then back in the UK for the live broadcast.

But in an interview yesterday, Goodman, 71, said he is not addicted to the sequins and flashing lights of the dance competition. He said: “I could easily go back to normal life.

My favourite place is home. Especially my bed. I like having a potter round the garden, reading my book and trying to change those bloody lightbulbs that are in the ceiling.

“Those things were born to annoy me.

“I love peace and quiet, but I just enjoy the showbiz when I can.”

Goodman said he was not mobbed like Tom Cruise, but he has signed people’s receipts in shopping markets.

He said he had a simple Christmas present wish list: “Just some pants.

“Something frilly for the older gentleman.”
