Simon McKenzie - Comic Cuts

It has been 25 years since Michael Winslow (Udderbelly's Pasture Bristo Square, 8pm, until August 29, *****) was at the peak of his fame as the vocalising sound effects maestro Sergeant 'Motormouth' Jones in the Police Academy movie franchise, but there are still plenty of people who remember him well.

The crowds are flocking to see the 'man of 10,000 voices', whose ability to perfectly mimic a staggering range of organic and electronic sounds is unparalleled.

From the minute he takes the stage to his final bow an hour later, the audience wear ear-to-ear grins as he impersonates Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix in full flight, air steward call bells, the Star Wars soundtrack and a host of animals.

With distortion, delay, echo and looping pedals - but no overdubs - he is able to create a truly incredible sonic palette - like a one-man Electric Ladyland studio.

He resists the temptation to simply be the world's greatest human beatbox, but when he does venture into hip-hop he's better than a lot of recent records I can think of. It's not strictly comedy, but man, is it funny.

"Thanks for coming. You could have gone to see something normal," says Adam Larter at the end of his free show The Legend of Bob Geldof and Other Short Stories (Laughing Horse @ City Cafe, 3pm, until August 28, ***).

His disjointed, mock-amateur, prop-heavy performance is like watching a one-man run-through of a lost Comic Strip Presents sketch, but there are plenty of flashes of originality and he has a stage persona like no other.

His childlike drawings and storyboards are hit and miss, but his Animal Farm 2 is all hit - using David Cameron as a punching bag long after George Orwell would have stopped. The Legend of Bob Geldof itself takes a while to get going, but Larter's re-enactment of Live Aid is inspired.

Another free show is Beer and Loathing and Lost Wages (Laughing Horse @ The Counting House, 6pm, until August 28, ***) which takes its inspiration from Hunter S Thompson - both in use of language and of intoxicants, at least in the past.

David Bratchpiece aka Bratchy is the man behind it, and as your attorney I advise you to check him out.
