Shortlist for Glasgow School of Art restoration

FIVE architectural practices have been shortlisted for the project to restore Glasgow School of Art’s fire-damaged Mackintosh Building.

Three Scottish firms - LDN, Page Park and John McAslan + Partners - are in the running for the complex project, which is expected to cost at least £20 million.

Among the projects they have worked on recently have been an overhaul of King’s Cross Station in London, a restoration of Sir Walter Scott’s former home at Abbotsford, in the Borders, and the refurbishment of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.

Also in contention for the project - which attracted 14 submissions of interest from around the world - are two London-based firms, Purcell and Avanti Architects.

The Grade A-listed building, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, lost about 10 per cent of its structure in the blaze last May, along with 30 per cent of its contents, including its iconic library.

The GSA has asked all five practices to present plans for the Mackintosh Building in the middle of March, with the winning designs due to be selected later that month.

Liz Davidson, director of the restoration project, said: “All of the shortlisted practices have a strong record in undertaking major restoration and work in historic buildings, together with an impressive commitment to the use of new technology and the finest craftsmanship.

“They each bring the level of experience and expertise that is vital to the restoration of Mackintosh’s masterpiece. We are now looking forward to hearing more about their proposed approaches.”
