Seven Scottish albums to look forward to in 2016

Kloe

At only 19, Kloe has already made quite the impression on the Scottish music scene.

Her electro pop singles ‘Touch’ and ‘Grip’ have seen her mentioned alongside the likes of Charli XCX.

The singer will be continuing her reign as Glasgow’s pop princess in 2016 when she releases her debut album on National Anthem (HAIM, CHVRCHES, Wet) / Columbia Records.

If her previous tracks are anything to go by, it’ll be full of teenage nostalgia, production from the Prides boys and catchy choruses.

Travis

For the first time since 2013, Travis are set to release a new album. The band who have racked up two number one albums, five top ten singles, two Brit Awards and more than eight million record sales, recently released single ‘Everything at Once’ as a free download. The song, which was written by bassist Dougie Payne, was accompanied by a video starring German actor Daniel Bruhl. The quartet will also be performing a few intimate shows in the run up to the release.

Mogwai

Now onto their third decade in the industry and more popular than ever, Mogwai will be working on new material in 2016. As well as working on the soundtrack to hit drama The Returned, the band have produced a score for Mark Cousins’ impressionistic documentary Atomic, which marks 70 years since the Hiroshima bomb. Alongside new a Mogwai record, the guys will be doing their own projects with the likes of Justin Lockey from Editors and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive.

Biffy Clyro

Although it’s not been confirmed that the band will be releasing an album in 2016, various signs point to new material being at least produced.

They’ve announced live dates for 2016, including Edinburgh’s Hogmanay party, and have been pictured in John Feldmann, the lead singer of ska-punk band Goldfinger’s instagram with mysterious captions like “5 songs 3 days”.

The band have also spoken about returning to their Ayrshire farmhouse, which they have used for over a decade, to make the record before they encountered a “plumbing problem” that caused sewage to leak through the walls. Lovely.

Primal Scream

Primal Scream will be releasing new album ‘Chaosmosis’ in March next year.

The album was recorded in Sweden and London and will be released on the band’s own label First International through Ignition Records.

It follows 2013’s ‘More Light’.

News of the album arrived with a six second video teaser posted on YouTube and four headline tour dates and four festival dates for 2016.

Fatherson

After signing a deal with Easy Life Records/Sony Music, the trio are set to release their second album in the new year.

The first single from the upcoming record ‘Always’ has already been received with open arms from the likes of Radio One with tickets for their tour being snapped up as soon as they went on sale.

The band’s first album ‘I Am An Island’ saw them fully establish themselves as one of the best Scottish bands around, playing to a capacity King Tut’s Wah Wah Tent at TITP 2014, crowds at SXSW in Austin, Texas and various festivals including Rockness, Belladrum and Wickerman.

Having recently finished touring with Prides, their popularity is likely grow even more in 2016.

Holy Esque

Holy Esque are set to release their debut album early next year after streaming Hexx online, the first song from the upcoming record ‘At Hope’s Ravine’. The post-punk band have proved themselves as ones to watch after performing at various locations around the country this year, including the Art School and Glasgow Garage as part of the Scottish Alternative Music Awards.
