Scottish One Direction fans descend on Murrayfield

A crowd of 50,000, mostly teenage girls and their mothers, danced the night away at the hotly anticipated gig.

Fans battled their way through traffic ahead of the gig – with congestion and an escaped cow on the M8 causing traffic chaos.

Tram bosses put on extra vehicles around 6pm to help everyone get to the stadium on time and said the network coped well with the demand.

Despite fans clamouring for a glimpse of their heroes, Zayn, Harry, Niall, Liam and Louis spent the night down south and didn’t arrive in Edinburgh until shortly before 4pm.

The band flew from Luton in their two private jets and after landing were given a police escort to Murrayfield for a sound check.

Earlier, band member Niall Horan had tweeted fans to say: “Edinburgh are you ready?? Can’t wait for the gig!” and with hours still to go the area around Scotland’s national rugby stadium was already packed with excited young fans.

Fans were sharing pictures of themselves in the stadium as the city prepared to host the most anticipated concert of the year. The crowds led to heavy traffic around the city however, with reports of gridlock on Queensferry Road and queues on Princes Street, Haymarket Junction, Waterloo Place and St Andrew Square.

Police had advised those attending the concert to use public transport where possible to try to alleviate traffic problems, and ScotRail put on extra carriages on its trains.
