At the time the photo was taken, there were at least 20 breweries in Scotland, including John Aitchison & Co. Ltd. at the Canongate Brewery, 21 Holyrood Road.

In the 1920s, the WM Younger brewery had installed a bottling plant in the Holyrood Brewery, which eventually closed in 1986.

As well as the beer barrels, washing can be seen hanging from pulleys at the windows .
