Scottish events supported through £350k cash fund

A total of 19 events are to receive the money to promote culture, heritage and creativity across the country, the Scottish Government said.

St Andrew’s Day marks the start of the programme of funding with a month-long food and drink festival in the town of St Andrews in Fife. Other events in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket and George Square in Glasgow will also celebrate the patron saint’s day.

The Scotland Sings festival, which sees choirs perform across the country, has been created from the fund.

Oban Winter Festival and Hogmanay parties in Edinburgh, Stonehaven and Stirling will also be supported along with a series of celebrations around Robert Burns’ birthday at the end of January.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “St Andrew’s Day, Christmas, Hogmanay and Burns night are important calendar dates for Scots and these events, together with wider activity, will give everyone the opportunity to celebrate Scotland’s rich heritage and distinctive culture.

“This vibrant winter events programme will bring people together to celebrate Scotland’s modern culture and traditions through the best of our nation’s music, arts, food and drink, innovation and entertainment.

“As a year-round destination for visitors, Scotland welcomes over 15.3 million people every year. St Andrew’s Day, Christmas, Hogmanay and Burns Night are perfect for celebrating all things Scottish either with us here in Scotland or around the world.”
