Scottish ballet take ‘Streetcar’ home

SCOTTISH Ballet is to stage an acclaimed version of A Streetcar Named Desire in the drama’s original setting of New Orleans.

The show is one of a number of flagship productions which are being taken overseas by Scotland’s national performing companies, thanks to a £300,000 funding boost.

A Streetcar Named Desire, which had its world premiere at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow last year, won a South Bank Arts Award last month.

The show, choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, will be heading to New Orleans as part of a tour of the United States later this year.

Highland Fling, Matthew Bourne’s production for the company, will be going on tour to Hong Kong in 2014. The Scottish Government’s international touring fund will also be supporting visits by Scottish Opera to New Zealand, Hong Kong and Austria.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra will be touring to Spain, Austria, Japan, Hong Kong and China over the next two years. Earlier this year the RSNO performed in China.

Cindy Sughrue, Scottish Ballet’s chief executive, said: “What better way to kick off our international tour this autumn than by bringing this incredible, moving story back to its home town of New Orleans, before touring elsewhere in America.”

Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “Scotland is one of the world’s most creative nations and home to exceptional artistic talent – with our national performing companies particularly renowned for the high quality of their work.

“Taking in the USA’s Deep South, Down Under, the Far East and Europe, these tours will further enhance Scotland’s global reputation for culture and
creativity.”
