Scott Granger: Chelley takes respect for brilliant new club smash that's a big hit in States

BORN and raised in Brooklyn, 21-year-old Chelley provides one for the girls this week with the genre-hopping club smash, Took The Night.

Already it's a massive hit in the States, where you cannot go to any club or party without hearing the now ubiquitous lines, "Every time I walk in the club. They hatin' on me 'cause they know I look good... I took the night."

Chelley was discovered on MySpace and gained early support from underground radio station 95.9, earning the respect of legendary producer Ricky Blaze along the way.

When DJ Enuff at New York's Hot 97fm, one of the country's most influential taste-makers, picked up on the track and began playing it continually on his show, the song began to spread to clubs around the country to become that rare beast, a piece of music that has morphed from song to anthem.

Took The Night has been described as 'many styles fused into one' and has everything from Baltimore go-go to hip-hop and urban through to classic house.

Explaining the origins of the track Chelley says, "Being a young female and going out, you'll see the same type of girl every time... and she's just looking at you funny. Jealous because you look good. We just wanted to capture that. When we heard the end result, we knew it was gonna be a hit."

One for the boys this week unfortunately comes from John and Edward. Signed to Sony Music, they will release their debut single later this month. Yes, finally bowing to public demand, Jedward's first single will be Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby), featuring 90s icon Vanilla Ice. The duo, who caused a national sensation with their gravity defying quiffs and energetic performances on last year's X Factor, exclusively performed the single along with Vanilla Ice at The National Television Awards in January and now the single is available to download with a CD release due in the shops on 15 February. Ice Ice Baby, which samples the bass-line of the Queen/Bowie classic Under Pressure, was originally written by Vanilla Ice and DJ Earthquake and hit No1 across the world. The success of the single led Ice's album, To the Extreme, to sell more than 15 million copies, making it one of the most successful selling rap records of all time.

Could history be repeated with Jedward? Nah.
