And nearly a third of Scots admitted to already owning at least one Christmas jumper, while one in five said they planned to buy one this year.

But more than 40 per cent of these jumpers will be worn only once or twice in the next two months.

The figures came as a campaign was launched to encourage Scots to again wear seasonal sweaters they already own or to swap last year’s with friends or family to save money and the environment.

Lynn Wilson, from Zero Waste Scotland, launching the Love Your Clothes campaign, said the clothing industry has the fifth-biggest environmental footprint of any UK industry.

She added: “We want to inspire people across the country to get upcycling.

“With many Christmas jumpers being worn only once or twice over the festive season, we are encouraging all Scots to transform theirs or swap it.

“Who knows, we could see a number of couture worthy Christmas creations which of course also add some ‘green’ style to wardrobes across the country.”
