Scots designers launch handmade spectacles range

An idea that began as a university project is set to become the height of fashion as two young Scots designers unveil a handmade range of wood and leather eyewear.

AyeSpy founders Lucy Ross and Jamie Bartlett, both from Glasgow, developed the eyewear over a period of 15 months. The 23-year-olds hand-craft all of their designs, made from natural materials and finished with adjustable leather earpieces, in their Kilsyth workshop.

Ross said: “When people buy a pair of distinctive sunglasses or spectacles from AyeSpy they know that they have purchased something that is as unique as the natural products they are made from.

“Every bit of sanding, shaping, cutting and finishing, is handcrafted by us in a range of different woods including Wenge, Walnut, Mahogany and Cherry, to create a distinctive frames in a range of contemporary and classic styles.”

Inspiration for the family of frames has been taken from famous Scottish inventors and discoverers and includes the Baird, Dunlop and Fleming.

Each frame takes an average of three hours to make and prices start from £135. For spectacle wearers, the glasses can be taken to opticians and fitted with prescription lens.

Ross added: “Our ultimate goal for AyeSpy is to become a recognised, well respected eyewear brand, producing desirable, high quality frames and supplying many optical chains throughout the UK.”
