Black Friday becomes ‘biggest UK shopping day in history’

Online retailers are reporting record-breaking sales from the first few hours of the bonanza making it likely that online retail sales in the UK will surpass £1 billion in one day.

But on the high street and in supermarkets there were no signs of the huge crowds which gathered last year, or the scuffles which broke out as customers fought over big-ticket items.

The sharp-tongued owner of an American-style diner in Edinburgh has taken to flame-grilling customers who leave bad reviews on TripAdvisor.

Andy Murray re-imagined in surrealist portrait

Tennis player Andy Murray has been reimagined as Rene Magritte’s iconic Son of Man painting, ahead of the Davis Cup final.

The design was created by Nial Smith, the Edinburgh-based designer who also mocked up Murray as ‘Crocodile Dunblane’, and wearing a Hibs-inspired kit at Wimbledon.
