Rose Murray Brown on wine: Pinot noir is my favourite red grape

My favourite red grape might be one of the most difficult to grow, but more countries are now succeeding with pinot noir.

The thin skins of the pinot noir grape make it prone to rot and disease, and it must be grown in a cool microclimate. Finally to make the perfect pinot, the grape needs careful handling in the vineyard.

While Burgundy may be pinot noir's homeland, I have purposely excluded it as there are so many other regions and countries now trying their hand at this tricky grape. Oregon is a well-known destination, but its pinots are very pricey, so I was delighted to find a good one for less than 20. New Zealand is also showing impressive, though expensive, results, Tasmania has some exciting examples, but for the best value succulent ripe pinot noir today, go to Chile.
