Remember when: Tracking train accidents over the years

THANKFULLY, there were no fatalities on this day back in 1937 when two trains collided just outside Joppa in the early hours of the morning.

Emergency workers rushed to the trackside when the 7:31am passenger train from Musselburgh and the London to Edinburgh service crashed into each other.

Breathing a sigh of relief that nobody had been hurt, they watched with amazement as the guard of the London train walked free from the wreckage, despite his van being smashed in the impact.

The cause of the crash seemed to be due to the London service being held up by a signal.

Not everyone has been so fortunate in rail accidents that have taken place on tracks across the Lothians over the years though.

In July 1984, 13 people died when the Glasgow to Edinburgh train derailed near Polmont.
