Remember when: Journey to the past

Parked in a neat row, their body work gleaming, these Lodekka buses were once a regular feature in the Old Town.

Before its demolition in 2006, the Eastern Scottish bus depot was not only a landmark building in New Street, but also a major employer for thousands of workers across the city.

In 1986, for example, the company had an average of 100 buses on local routes, as well as fleets working on long-distance services.

Anyone walking down New Street nowadays cannot help but notice how much the area has changed, yet this week the Evening News revealed a Canadian investor is lining up a deal to revive the original multi-million pound plan to develop the Caltongate site.

Hoping to buy the whole area and develop it in line with the original planning consent, the area could eventually boast new homes, a hotel, shops and offices.

The massive site, which has become something of an eyesore, has been lying empty since the collapse of previous developer Mountgrange in early 2009.
