Remember when: Day city queued to see serial killer

SPECIAL security arrangements were put in place when notorious serial killer Peter Manuel arrived at Parliament House on 24 June, 1958.

The high profile 32-year-old woodcutter – sentenced to death for multiple murders – was ushered in the back door of the building, having made his way from Barlinnie Prison for an appeal hearing.

Members of the public had queued outside from the early hours of the morning, desperate to listen to his appeal, but lawyers eventually decided Manuel should not be present for it.

It was considered to be in his "best interests" for him to instead wait in a cell.

Manuel had been sentenced on 29 May for the murders of seven people, including a couple and their ten-year-old son.

He was eventually hanged at Barlinnie Prison.
