Remember when: Capital goes the extra royal mile for the Queen

THE QUEEN made another Royal Week visit to the Capital to honour a host of well-known figures at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The monarch presented the honours during an investiture ceremony on Tuesday, before thousands of guests joined her at a garden party which she hosted.

Among those receiving honours at the ceremony was Glasgow-born composer Craig Armstrong, who received an OBE. Reverend Andrew Jolly, the chaplain who led the memorials in the aftermath of last year's North Sea helicopter disaster, was presented with an MBE.

Queen Elizabeth II has made numerous visits to the Capital since her coronation in June 1953.

A year prior to her official coronation, Her Majesty and Earl Haig walked past children waving flags as they made their way to Acheson House during a visit to Edinburgh in June 1952, which was the Queen's first official engagement.

The following summer, the Queen walked alongside the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, to Signet Library on Parliament Square, where the Duke was installed as Knight of the Thistle.

Her Majesty and Princess Anne took some time off to walk their dogs in Holyrood Park during another visit to the city in October 1976.

During her Silver Jubilee visit to the Capital on May 24, 1977, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived at the entrance of the Assembly Halls for the opening of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Thousands of people had lined the Royal Mile to cheer the Queen on her way. She was dressed in a full-length dress and coat in mauve satin, embroidered on the bodice in pearls and rhinestones.

The Queen made visiting time a Royal occasion at the Simpson's maternity hospital, where she met new mum Judith Andrews and her baby in July 1979.

Her Majesty's walk among the wards at the infirmary was one of the longest she had ever done - a three-quarter mile tour lasting almost two hours.

But even the Queen didn't escape the dismal Scottish weather during another Edinburgh visit in the summer of 1989.

Holding an umbrella, she inspected the Guard of Honour formed by the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, after receiving the Keys of the City on her arrival.
