Recommended restaurants: Smoke Stack's plaudits just pile up

The Capital's steak fans have headed in their masses to Smoke Stack since it opened its doors on Broughton Street almost 15 years ago.

Famed in the city for its impressive cuts of meat and attention to detail, it has won many followers over the years, as well as making the most of its close proximity to the Playhouse to serve many a pre-theatre dish to visitors.

But there is still room to attract new customers, locals or visitors to the Capital, who are yet to taste the delights of what this friendly and funky restaurant has to offer.

Owner Richard Forbes and his team have recently revamped their a la carte menu to offer an impressive selection of dishes. Among them are starters such as chilli con carne (5.50); salads and sandwiches (from 9.95); burgers (from 6.95); and, of course, steaks.

Every steak at Smoke Stack is supplied by John Gilmour's in the Borders and is trimmed in the restaurant. There are four to choose from, 8oz rump (13.95), 10oz rib eye (16.95), 10oz sirloin (16.95) and 8oz fillet (19.95), as well as the option to add seafood to make your meal one to remember.

Vegetarians need not be afraid though as there is plenty for you to tuck into as well, including cheese dishes, soups, omelettes and the mighty fine spicy bean burger. Delicious.
