San Marco offers a little slice of Italy in the heart of Stockbridge

AS one of the city's longest-standing Italian restaurants, San Marco offers authentic dishes at affordable prices, as well as a traditional family-run service.

For all these reasons, it is no wonder the Stockbridge eatery has proved popular with locals, and diners from further afield, since husband and wife duo Vincenzo and Berenice Alonzi opened its doors back in 1984.

It has a reputation for "good food, fine wine and great customer service", qualities the couple's sons Franco and Ernesto - who took over the business when their parents retired and returned to Italy - have sought to maintain.

Customers should expect a relaxed atmosphere when they step through the doors of San Marco, but no compromise on quality.

Lunch options range from around 1.50 for appetisers up to 6.75 for mains.

The evening a la carte menu boasts the likes of sliced Parma ham and melon (8.95), egg pasta filled with lobster (9.75), not to mention the restaurant's legendary pizzas, ranging from 6.75 for a Margherita to 9.95 for a Rugola (tomato, mozzarella, rocket salad and Parma ham).

Every dish is prepared using the Alonzi family's traditional cooking methods, meaning a true taste of Italy is offered with every bite.

When it comes to drink, the restaurant has a strong selection of reasonably priced wines and beers, all of which are tailored to compliment the dishes on offer.
