Recommended restaurant: First Coast

WHEN Skye brothers Hector and Alan MacRae opened First Coast in Dalry in 2003 they had one aim in mind - to provide honest, good-value food in casual and friendly surroundings.

Seven years on and their loyal, ever-growing following is testament to their success.

First Coast is a relaxed neighbourhood bistro serving great, no- nonsense food, where the prices are low enough for people to visit regularly, not just for those special occasions.

All dishes are homemade, including the bread and ice cream, and sustainable fish has been on the menu since the restaurant opened.

The interesting and eclectic menu, created by chef Hector, boasts starters such as crispy filo wrapped feta with harissa (4.75), tempting mains like Brazilian coconut and lime seafood stew (12.95) and impressive desserts for the sweet-toothed, including sticky gingerbread pudding with gingerbread ice cream and caramel sauce (4.95).

The beauty of First Coast is that it is consistent and reliable, meaning customers know they will get quality, variety and informality when they step through the door, time after time.

Make the most of its "regional nights" celebrating different cuisines from across the world, as well as its lunch and early evening deals (three courses for a mere 13.50). Delightful.
