VETERAN Tom Forrest has some information to help Evening News reader George Waugh, who contacted us to ask a question about a memorial to Thomas Peck Hunter VC.

Q: Mr Waugh asked: “I was curious as to why the stone monument was located at Leith as I believe Tom Hunter attended Stenhouse Primary School and Tynecastle High School. I also believe there are war veterans houses located in Stenhouse Street West, Edinburgh, known locally as the “Tom Hunter Houses”. I wonder if it was something to do with a Royal Marines base, which may have been located at Leith?”

A: Mr Forrest, who was on the committee which oversaw the building of the memorial at Ocean Terminal, said: “We wanted it in a place which would be free from vandals. We were offered various sites in Edinburgh which we didn’t think would be very safe and then were offered Ocean Terminal which is an excellent site as there are lots of visitors there.”
