Readers' Queries round-up

Q Elise Campbell, a post-graduate student at the Edinburgh College of Art, is looking for former Land Girls who worked at Saughton Park during the Second World War.

Elise is studying for a Masters of Fine Art degree in Art Space and Nature and is looking to develop an art project at Saughton Park. As part of this, she is looking to get in touch with Land Girls. She explains: "During the Second World War, Land Girls allegedly dug over the ground of Saughton Park and replaced the formal flower beds with onions. The onions were then distributed around the hospitals of Edinburgh. It is also said that Land Girls lived in the Saughtonhall Manor.

"I am very interested to find out more about the Land Girls who worked at Saughton Park or anyone who remembers the parks and gardens during the 1940s Dig for Victory Campaign, with the aim of interviewing them and listening to their stories. I am hoping that some of these findings can be incorporated into my final year degree show this June."

Q Ian Duff asks: "Where can I get a team photograph which includes Sean Connery when he played for Lorwood Football Club?"

A Further to Arthur Nicholson's query about the clock tower on Register House in Princes Street, which has two XIIs instead of an XI and a XII on the clock face looking down Princes Street, one reader has sent in this explanation: "Rumour has it that there was a dispute between the clock maker and whoever commissioned him to make the clock, over his fee. The clock maker was disgruntled so to get his own back he deliberately put two XIIs on the clock face."
