Reader’s queries

Our readers’ queries this week include a plea to Dunkirk veterans and a search for old friends from South Australia

Q: Nick Simpson, from Wirral, writes: “I would be pleased to hear from any Dunkirk veterans, or their relatives, who would be willing to share any memories of the Dunkirk evacuation (May-June 1940). I would especially be interested to learn the date of their embarkation from Dunkirk and the name of the vessel that brought them home.”

Q: Dave from Colinton has this query: “When the Dreghorn barracks were refurbished, a cottage was demolished that stood next to Redford Road.

“On the wall of the cottage was a dedication to ‘Chinese Gordon’. What was the dedication and what happened to the panel?” Can anyone help?

Q: Tommy Smith, who is now living in South Australia, would like to track down some old friends from the city.

He writes: “Does anyone know Colin ‘Coco’ May and Margaret Dick, who lived in Harewood Crescent at Niddrie Mains? Or Tony Holmes, who lived off Gifford Park, off Clerk Street, and Ann Ferguson, who lived in Pennywell at Pilton?

“Tony and Ann later got married.”

If you can help, please get in touch and we will pass on any information to Tommy.
