Radar weekly: The latest from the Scottish music scene

• It has been widely reported over the weekend that The Doghouse in Dundee has been forced to close down for financial reasons, in what would be a significant blow to the city’s live scene. The venue previously shut its doors in 2009 but bounced back following a fundraising campaign. No-one was available to confirm or deny the reports when Radar contacted the venue.

• Admiral Fallow came out on top in the music category of the Creative Scotland Awards last week. Frightened Rabbit and Rachel Sermanni were also in the running for the prize.

• Stanley Odd, Tango in the Attic, Finding Albert, The Deadline Shakes and The Featherman have all made the shortlist for the Big Apple Award. They will perform in a battle of the bands event at g2, Glasgow on Wednesday (19 Dec), before the eventual winner is rewarded with the chance to support The View at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on April 7.

• Details of next year’s Glasgow Music and Film Festival have been announced, including an appearance from Gainsbourg muse Jane Birkin at the premiere of her film Souvenirs of Serge and a screening of the multi-genre collaborative work Whatever Gets You Through The Night. The full programme for the festival will be revealed on 16 January.

• You can now watch the new video for The Woodpile from Frightened Rabbit, in which the band check out a New York crime scene.

• Biffy Clyro have posted a new video for the single Black Chandelier, the first to be taken from their new album Opposites.

• The Scottish Fiction website has released a Christmas EP featuring a range of artists, with all proceeds going to homeless charity Shelter. Check it out on Bandcamp.

The Glasgow punk/hardcore collective round off 2012 with a Christmas party, which will feature sets from United Fruit and the last ever performance from Citizens.

• Kid Canaveral’s Christmas Baubles III

Sat 22 Dec: The Caves, Edinburgh

Kid Canaveral’s all-day, all-night Christmas party is back for another instalment of live music, comedy and DJs. Line up includes Malcolm Middleton, Josie Long, Meursault, RM Hubbert, Randolph’s Leap, Eleanor Morton and Elaine Malcolmson.

• Christmas Songwriters’ Club

Sat 22 Dec: Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh

Well established as a local celebration of the Christmas spirit, Christmas Songwriters’ Club celebrate their fifth annual event with a very special evening of original festive songs, music and story. Featuring many special musicians and performers all creating a little bit of Yuletide joy (and winter melancholy too). The evening will feature contributions from the likes of Withered Hand, Adam Stafford, The Machine Room, We See Lights and TeenCanteen.
