Woodenbox join Olive Grove Records roster

Olive Grove Records‘ roster of up and coming bands keeps growing. Following releases from The State Broadcasters, The Son(s), The Moth & The Mirror and more, the DIY label has now signed up Glasgow group Woodenbox. The band will be familiar to readers of Radar (under their former guise as Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers), as we profiled them back in 2009 and reviewed their barnstorming T in the Park performance in 2011.

Woodenbox have recorded an album with Paul Savage at the Chem 19 studio which will be released in late spring, and they embark on a short tour of Scotland in March and April. (Click here for full details).

Gnomegame sold out, The Pictish Trail on tour

News reaches us from the HQ of Fence Records in Fife that the Gnomegame Festival, which was only announced a couple of weeks ago, has now sold out. Anyone who has missed out may like to console themselves with the new album from Fence co-founder The Pictish Trail – Secret Soundz Vol. 2 hit the shops (well, the ones that are left) on Monday and will be supported by a UK tour, which includes the following Scottish dates:

Thursday: Art Club @ Celtic Connections, Glasgow (with Rozi Plain)

Friday: Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy (with Eagleowl + Randolph’s Leap)

Saturday: The Tunnels, Aberdeen (with Eagleowl)

Meursault to play first Haddowfest clubnight

Haddowfest have been staging their one-day, multi-venue festivals in Edinburgh for the past three years, but now they’re launching a monthly club night – Haddowfest Presents… – in the capital.

Fittingly, Edinburgh favourites Meursault will headline the first night in their first live show of 2013, at the Liquid Room on April 26, and the event will be hosted by Radio One’s Ally McCrae. The support acts will be chosen by Meursault, whose third LP Something For The Weakened topped several end-of-year lists for 2012.

Tickets are available in advance, and stay tuned for announcements about future nights.

• On the subject of Meursault, Sebastian Reynolds has produced a remix of their song ‘Dearly Distracted’. You can listen and purchase on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to the Helen & Douglas House children’s hospice.

Admiral Fallow and Olympic Swimmers join forces for Avalanche gig

Two of Scotland’s favourite bands have taken a novel approach to live performance when they try a “revolving line-up” for the next in-store at Avalanche Records in Edinburgh on February 1. A blog post on the shop’s website explains the concept, which will see Admiral Fallow and Olympic Swimmers become one indie-folk mass entity:

“Next in our series of gigs from bands featured amongst our best sellers of 2012 features not one but two bands from our top 10 playing not just together but at the same time ! That’s right a revolving line up of members from both bands will play songs from both albums and throw in a few surprises.”

Tickets are priced at £5, £10 (with print) or £20 (with t-shirt).

New PAWS video

You can watch the new video from PAWS on YouTube, for the song ‘Sore Tummy’, featuring Alice Costelloe. The band play shows at Mono in Glasgow (14 Feb), The Tunnels in Aberdeen (15), Madhatters in Inverness (16) and the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh (17) before heading off to the rest of the UK and over to America in March.

• If you missed the announcement last week, Primal Scream will headline this year’s Wickerman Festival, in what has been called a “major coup” by the organisers.
