Putting out fatty foods will help wild birds to survive the cold

MORE than half of adults across the UK regularly feed birds in their gardens.

If you are keen to join the gang, now is the perfect time to start as the colder months can mean food is in short supply for our feathery friends.

Begin by choosing the right bird feeder for your garden or outdoor space.

"It is important to place feeders in a sheltered area to protect birds in your garden and help them survive the winter," explains Steve Taylor, plant manager at Dobbies Garden World Edinburgh.

"If you can, plant colourful, berry-bearing plants, such as firethorn, hawthorn and holly, as birds relish these and will be attracted by the bright colour."

At this time of year, the RSPB recommends putting out food and water on a regular basis.

In severe weather, feed visiting birds twice daily - in the morning and in the early afternoon.

Wild birds will always appreciate fatty foods during the winter months as they need the energy to maintain their fat reserves, allowing them to survive frosty nights.

Once you establish a feeding routine, the RSPB advises it is stuck to, allowing the birds to develop routine visits.
