Pony trekking at Craigmillar

One reader asks: Help!! My dad, who is 88, remembers pony trekking at Craigmillar probably at the side of Prestonfield House. Can anyone post any info on this?

Marion Hood says: In the mid to late 1950s I used to ride Icelandic horses introduced into Scotland by Stuart McIntosh and stabled at Tower Mains Farm, Liberton.

In 1959 they were moved to Alnwickhill. We regularly took them down to a field at Prestonfield House where as far as I can remember they were used for trekking.

They were also used for trekking at Carfraemill Hotel near Lauder. In 1958 we rode them from Lauder to Aberfeldy via the ferry at Queensferry and a photograph appeared on the front page of the Scotsman as we rode down the hill into Aberfeldy.

We won the the Shield for the longest distance trekked to get to the Atholl & Breadalbane Agricultural Show. Hope this information is of interest.
