No luxury has been spared at Glasgow's most indulgent spa

For months, I've been excited about the spa at five-star hotel Blythswood Square. That's because its opening had been pushed further and further back, as the building work ran over its deadlines. Rumours abounded about the design, which included whispers that there was going to be a swing over the swimming pool.

So, when it finally flung open its doors, I grabbed my cossie and sprinted along.

After all the hype, this beautifully designed space doesn't disappoint.

There's a mezzanine sauna overlooking a 25m swimming pool (which boasts swan-neck and hydro jets) and, along a rectangle of corridors, you'll find a crystal steam room, solarium, laconium, tepidarium and a huge Jacuzzi.

And, in lieu of the swing (which probably didn't pass health and safety regulations), one end of the pool boasts a darkened grotto area (for loved-up couples, one supposes).

There are no windows here, or clocks, so you can completely switch off, while wafting around in your fluffy gown and slippers. Even the locker rooms are worth a mention, as they consist of curtained dressing areas for the more modest visitor, and an attention to detail that includes customer hairbrushes (the item I always forget to take with me to a spa).

If your stomach starts rumbling, then you don't have to brave the lift to the upstairs restaurant, either, as there's a spa cafe, with decor by Scottish interior design company, Graven Images. Here, the food is served on three-tier cake stands, with delicious dainties designed to boost your blood sugar.

The menu of treatments are as good as the foodie treats. They've gone for an organic range, Ila, as well as therapies from French brand, Anne Semonin.

There's also a Scottish-themed selection, called Turus (Gaelic for journey), which includes a Seaweed Bath. However, as a sucker for holistic treatments, I couldn't leave without trying Ila's Tibetan style Ku Nye Massage (60 minutes for 80), which incorporated cupping, kneading and acupressure using soothing hot herb poultices.

It was fantastic, which may have something to do with the skills of my amazing therapist, Claire.

So, finally, Glasgow has a destination to rival Edinburgh's One Spa. Swing or no swing, it was well worth the wait.
