Nirvana nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

GRUNGE legends Nirvana, British rocker Peter Gabriel and 80s pop duo Hall and Oates have been named as nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Nirvana, the Seattle rock band led by Kurt Cobain, were largely responsible for the widespread popularity of the grunge sound in the early 1990s.

Cobain, widely considered one of the most iconic frontmen in music history, died in 1994 at the age of 27 after shooting himself at his home.

Nirvana have been nominated for the musical honour for the first time this year, as have former Genesis frontman Gabriel and Hall and Oates. They are joined on the shortlist by YES, Link Wray and the Zombies, The Replacements and Linda Sonstadt.

British heavy metal pioneers Deep Purple, KISS, LL Cool J, N.W.A., The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Cat Stevens, The Meters, and eight-time nominees Chic complete the shortlist.

Canadian prog rockers Rush and hip-hop duo Public Enemy were among the inductees this year.

More than 600 voters will determine who makes it into the Hall of Fame, with inductees announced in December.
