CANONGATE KIRK, EDINBURGH

MIRIAM Gomez-Moran is a pianist who exudes passion and enthusiasm for the music she plays and isn’t afraid of exploring the more demanding pieces in the repertoire. This concert, in aid of the Friends of Paintings in Hospitals Scotland, included works by Chopin, Haydn and Mozart. However, it was in the Liszt setting of a Petrarch sonnet, Sonetto 104 Del Petrarca, that the young Spanish pianist really showed her mettle. Gomez-Moran didn’t put a finger wrong, and delivered a rhapsodic performance of this emotionally charged work.

Chopin’s polonaises don’t always have Liszt’s subtlety or poeticism. His more playful nature, though was highlighted beautifully by Gomez-Moran in the B flat minor Scherzo No 2 Op 31. Here she brought out the whimsical and more tender aspects of the music, which provided a welcome relief from Chopin’s grand didactic statements.
