Man up, and douse yourself in these new fragrances for Autumn

Aventus, 123 for 75ml, Creed at Harvey Nichols (0131 524 8388). Launched to celebrate Creed's 250th anniversary, this eau de parfum initially has a strong scent, reminiscent of lemon thyme, then calms to a light citrus, which is very pleasant and maintains a masculine identity.

Lasting impression * * * *

Private Blend Azure Lime eau de parfum, 115 for 50ml, Tom Ford, at Harvey Nichols (0131 524 8388). The latest addition to the Private Blend collection is at first quite a powerful combination of citrus tones, hinting at the lime water within. It soon dries down into a warm, sweet, musky fragrance. Over the day the scent lasts well, and is still noticeable long into the afternoon.

Is it musky, or just musty? The smell certainly lingers. Some may think it smells like expensive Toilet Duck, but others will love it. The man who wears this just needs to find a love interest who loves the smell of a clean bathroom.

Hidden talents * * * *

LOUD For Him, 39 for 75ml, Tommy Hilfiger (0870 034 2566). This is a clean and light blend of patchouli and rose, which results in a fresh scent that is not too simplistic. As far as the name goes, this will appeal to both those with rock stars and opera singer aspirations.

Can't see the wood for the trees * * *

Wonderwood, 48 for 50ml, Comme des Garcons (0207 494 6220). For men who like woody scents, this does what it says on the tin. It has a strong woody smell that gets more subtle as the day goes on and a nice spicy, peppery kick. It's subtle enough for a woman to wear it too, but feels a little pedestrian for the edgy fashion house.

Crowd pleaser * * * *

Limited edition eau de toilette, 45 for 110ml, Aramis Impeccable, at John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com). Apparently created with the more mature gentleman in mind, this is an interesting combination of rich and deep (Moroccan cedar wood and black pepper) with more light and airy (citrus zest) fragrances. Contrary to the sales pitch, it will appeal to all ages.
