Lynne McCrossan: Sometimes, style is a matter of geography

TWO girls walk into a bar in the heart of the Grassmarket on a Saturday night. One is poured into a petite pastel prom dress – the other wrapped tightly in a tiny black number.

Armed with a wine cooler and a bottle of ros, they find two seats tucked away at the end of a large table crammed full of people.

As they begin looking around the pub, they are struck by a stark contrast.

It's the weekend, yet everyone appears rather dressed down in comparison to their glitzy get-ups.

Around the crowded table, mere millimetres from them, sits a girl in a simple silk jumpsuit.

They lean over and start chatting to her before coming right out with the burning question on their lips – why does everyone look so casual?

The answer is simple when the girl in the jumpsuit discovers where the pair hail from: Glasgow.

The girls had taken a jaunt east for the evening to experience a night out on the town, Capital style, and could barely believe the difference between how we dress for a evening to the way the ladies back home do it.

You see, our city has a silent dress code slapped on it come close of business Friday. That dress code is less is more – and it would seem that following the said rule boils down to nothing more than a matter of geography.
